Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition was held from June 1, 1909 to October 16, 1909
on what is now the campus of the University of Washington in Seattle. More than
3.7 million people from all over the country and world came to visited the
exhibits. As much as the exposition was meant to bring commercial attention to
the resources of the Northwest it also was a way to bring Seattle onto the
world's stage and a legitimist cosmopolitan city. 100 years latter we are still
trying to figure out what that exactly means.
These are selected commemorative A.Y.P. souvenir flags sewn for a the show "100 years; for better or worse" at Gallery 4culture in 2009 with the Seattle artist Patrick Holderfield
